US-based travel search engine Kayak enters India, launches Kayak.in
15 July, 2008
US-based travel meta search engine Kayak.com has launched its India specific website Kayak.in that currently offers its users flight search and fare alerts facilities. A Kayak spokesperson has told AlooTechie, “Our business development team has made several trips to India and we are in active negotiations with several travel providers.”
According to the spokesperson, Kayak.com was already receiving significant traffic, about 300,000 searches per month, from Indian IP addresses and Indian origins. Through its India website, Kayak aims to serve this demand through local currency and by applying the correct POS (point of sales).
On being asked about the market potential that the company sees in the Indian market, the spokesperson said, “After the US, India is Kayak.com’s second biggest market. Indians have been using the UK or US site until now. We were anxious to launch a local site for savvy online travellers of India.”
Currently, Kayak doesn’t have its office in India. According to the spokesperson, travel providers interested in partnering with Kayak.in may contact Annie Wilson, director of business development, Kayak Europe. Annie Wilson is based in London.
