HT Media to launch job portal Shine.com

26 March, 2008
Firefly e-Ventures, a wholly-owned subsidiary of HT Media, is preparing to launch an online job portal Shine.com. According to Firefly e-Ventures, Shine aims to bring to its users “the best job opportunities, relevant career advice, updated company and industry information, and the most comprehensive salary benchmarking tool.”

Firefly e-Ventures plans to focus on building brands and businesses in the new media space. Recently, the company was in news for acquiring social networking site Desimartini.com for less than $10 million (about Rs 40 crore). Of course, the figure and the phrase “less than” had raised a lot of comments on AlooTechie.

Though I agree that it would be very tough to create another Naukri or Monster in a short period but It will not stop others from trying.
Look at Timesjobs. These days they project themselves to be the Number 1 Job Site in India though it is arguable.

The coming of SHINE will definintely cause a dent in the Market share of other BIG Players if Firefly has a Solid Product.
They need to come up with some unique strategy for attracting the Job Seeker and innovate otherwise it would be just another Job Portal.

As far as Niche Job Sites, there are not many takers for them as of now in India but this arena will surely open up in the times to come due to the fact that a Job Seeker does not want to spend too much time while browsing through Loads of Job Postings.

Looks like they dont have a clue as to how to build database :d

Rakesh, there is a fanda of bill gates that if u are not expert of one technology or IDEA then hire some one same HT also did they hire it with red match.

2ed this is what is launching to start is just a kind of beta so neither u and nor me can comment that what product will come but as per my understanding this is going to be a different future then all other portals but yes one i am agree with you that it will take time for concept to get sold in market. if this will get sold then no one can stop them.

1. Success in the online space is not a conditional inference of success in Offline space.

2. Niche sites can take a walk. India isn't UK. Jobseekers do not have any regional/industry/functional-area affiliation. (Eg: Dice and ITPeople both failed to take off. City specific jobsites from Irishjobs is not even visible. Testingjobz is another example of "failed to take off" category)

3. Indian Employers dont experiment by spending cash. Nobody will even try testing a new jobsite for free. Since the growth in no of hiring is faster, companies do not have the time to waste on experimenting. They need fresh Just-in-time solutions.

4. It might sound easier to say "5% of the large market is good enough". Gimme a break. You got to spend as much as naukri or monster to even think about 0.1% market share. So stop this "Niche jobsite" gas. Its not gonna work in India. Period.

5. Many large recruitment agencies have failed to take off in the jobsite space. Go4career (People One), Careermosaicindia (TMI Networks), Karmaquest ( ABC ) , Prizedjobs (Head Hunter& Sify) etc... Why?? Because they dont understand Internet :p

6. Many media/publication companies have failed too. That’s a long list :D

7. One needs to have a strong understanding about Internet space, Employer psyche and last but not the least "understanding the sales process of a jobsite"!

8. The amount of risks in launching a jobsite is far higher than perceived Risk ( copied line...but still holds good )

My Advise for others : Stop launching jobsite and look at something else. It’s already a packed zone.

@Editor : Boss...Your CAPTCHA is tougher than CAT Entrance :p

1. You need "CVs to attract Employers"... you need "Job Postings to attract CVs"...
2. Offline success or presence is not going to help online...
3. Large % of internet users & job searchers are from areas for which no one is posting jobs...
4. Quality of hirable CVs is not getting posted...
5. There are very little jobs for the mass available on Job sites...
6. Mass available on jobsite doesn't give substantial revenues to job sites...
7. Therefore, is there a scope for ramping up one more mass jobsite... or focus on one/too many niches and be strong there?

If UI means success, India would have seen some 100+ successful internet portals. UL compliments to your success. Thats about it.

Understanding about Internet is critical. Else its a sureshot flopshow :)

The Print strength can't back them because they have a very weak Job section and they are visible ony in Delhi. Delhi isn't India :p

Going by your logic, Cybermediadice (Cybermedia publication) , Yellojobs (NDTV) , Jobstreet (TV18) and DHavenues.com (Deccan Herald) should have succeeded. Where are all these guys?? :p

Hi Rakesh,
Don't underestimate the product as it hasn't launched yet. From the UI point of view, its great UI and strinkingly different from the crowd. Also, they have the strength of the print which neither monster nor naukri has. Follow the product closely for launch. A decade may be too long a time :-)

Hey!
I checked out the UI and if the freshness of it is anything to go by i think we have a winner.
Also, with the way the current job sites "match" jobs, i think if they do have a good job matching capability, they will sweep the market.
Great name too...

Looking at their understanding about Internet business, its going to be ruff roads for them. They may have to fight it out with cybermedia , yellojobs , techtribe , jobstreet and jobsdb first.

If they do everything right, this might take about an year. Then they need to get themself equipped to fight against Timesjobs, clickjobs, monster and naukri. Thats a likely event only after a decade, if they could hire guys who'll not vanish after 6 months :p

basically what will happen now is that Naukri and Monster will fight it out for No1 slot...while Timesjobs and Shine will happily enter in a 'cola' war and eventually settle for No 3 and 4.

Don really think that that these big job portals will buzz with this news.....
