Cyrus Oshidar, Pushpendra Misra, Malvika Mehra, Karl Gomes to judge Yahoo Uncannies
05 March, 2009
Yahoo India has roped in Cyrus Oshidar, creative head, BBC; Pushpendra Misra, director, Flying Saucer Films; Malvika Mehra, group creative director, Ogilvy & Mather Advertising; and Karl Gomes, national creative director, digital, Rediffusion|Y&R as its panel of judges for Uncannies, an online contest designed to identify the most creative work in the field of advertising.
“We are delighted to have top creative minds of the industry as panel of judges for Uncannies. It’s a great validation of our efforts to reward creativity and surface the best and brightest talent in our industry,” Nitin Mathur, director, marketing, Yahoo India, has said.
According to Yahoo India, creative agencies as well as individuals from print, television, radio, outdoor and the online medium have already posted over 300 of their best work on Uncannies.com in less than three weeks of the contest launch. So far, creatives on print seem to have dominated most entries followed by outdoor, radio and TV.
In order to take part in the contest, participants must submit their individual entries directly onto the contest website Uncannies.com. The deadline to submit entries has now been extended to March 15, 2009. [The earlier deadline was February 28, 2009.]
According to Yahoo, consumers will also get a chance to rate the shortlisted creative. However, the expert panel’s decision would be final. Besides one grand winner who will get a free trip to Cannes, the next Top 3 winners will walk away with an Apple iPhone each. There is also Yahoo merchandise as consolation prizes for the next top 100 participants.
“Congratulations to Yahoo for creating this unique platform. It’s encouraging to know that this award gives the winner a trip to Cannes, much nicer than a cheap gold plated man with wings,” Cyrus Oshidar, creative head, BBC, has said.

The best part about such contest is a chance to visit Cannes and meet top honchos of creative field. The exposure will come very handy for people who have got the talent but struggling with lack of proper platform to showcase their skills.
What a waste of news. We already know the same by coming on your website and seeing that banner ad. Is this a part of your deal with Yahoo. If yes, please excuse me as I refuse to be a part of Aloo now.
Yahoo!! good going.. to get its seat back
Hosting a contest is one way to get talented and creative individual to to work and show what they got in the industry of print, television, radio, outdoor and the online medium. This kind of event motivates talented individuals to show their creative minds. This is s huge accomplishment by Yahoo.
The contest was a good approach to search for the top most creative mind but is it that easy to rank creations? everyone has its own boundaries of creations and their own universe of imagination. as far as creativity is concerned what is incredible for one person may be just a simple art form for the other.....though a tough task but good to know that the contest was a big success.
Most of the people in the world use Google first, secondly Yahoo
these type of competitions motivates the hidden talent to showcase their work.
I am happy to see this fair compitition.
In some field gogle give beeter result but if we see mail Format, Google could not beat yahoo yet.
Is there any update on the same this year? whether the event is being organized this year or it has already taken place? Thanks

Great blog. There's a lots good data in this blog, though I would like tell you something. I can understand the content, but the navigation doesn't work so good. I never usually post on blogs but I have found this is very useful work. I high appreciate this post. It’s hard to find the good from the bad sometimes, but I think you’ve nailed it! would you mind updating your blog with more information?
Yahoo needed to something of this scale to bring back the attention on itself. Its a win-win situation for both the sponsors as well as participants. A trip to Cannes! Well..nothing can beat that. However, Yahoo should make it an annual affair and not just one-off thing. The brand visibility and opportunity for many talented firms are sureshot outcomes.
Great event organised by yahoo in 2009, we look forward to more such events in 2010.
In fact many people or business use Yahoo as a marketing tool for promoting their work. I think "Yahoo merchandise as consolation prizes for the next top 100 participants" is deeply right.
It is really amazing how companies like Google, Microsoft or Yahoo manage there workflow and inner working. I mean google have like hundreds of freelance coders cracking on different code snippets and they come out with the best products, and their free. I can´t wait what Yahoo have to counter-offer.
With more advertisers coming online, we can look forward to more excitement here in 2010.
Great news! It is a good indication that Yahoo is not "dead" and can react. It would be great to see a strong reaction from Yahoo!. A monopolistic market as the search market today is not beneficial to anyone. Thanks!
Lot of times we have seen that these awards are biased one and guys that are doing great job gets unnoticed. Hope this award won't be like that
If I am not wrong WebChutney won this award.
Well, it must be very interesting to choose the best advertiser. As for me, I came to the conclusion that the main idea of any ad is to be noticed by people and remembered. Usually these are such ads which have something unusual about them. People may not like them and even dislike but they remembered the logo.
It is nice, but understanding that yahoo is the second search engine in any rating... so bless it to be the first one, cause I am tired of Google. Bing must get better to beat Google!
Thanks.
