Google Lively enables users to create 3D virtual chat rooms

11 July, 2008
Google has launched an online tool called Lively that allows users to create 3D (three dimensional) virtual chat rooms where they can invite friends and chat with them online. Users of Lively can also decorate their online chat rooms and personalize the surroundings with avatars, outfits and furniture of their choice.

The new online tool also enables users to play YouTube videos in their virtual TVs and show photos in virtual picture frames inside their Lively rooms. According to Google, the Lively chat rooms can also be embedded in blogs and websites.

Niniane Wang, an engineering manager at Google, has developed Lively as a part of Google’s 20 per cent project that allows the company’s employees to spend one day a week working on projects outside their day-to-day responsibilities.

“The Lively team wants to help people experience another dimension of the web. We hope you will use the product to express yourself with and without words, and to do this in the places you already visit on the web,” Niniane Wang writes on the Google blog.
