Online shopping active in 747 rural towns in India: Study

A study by ecommerce marketplace eBay.in reveals that online shopping is active in 747 rural towns in India. The study, titled eBay India Census 2009, further states that while South India has the most active online buyers at 41 per cent of all transactions, West India has the most active online sellers at 46 per cent of all transactions.

According to the study findings, India's Top 5 ecommerce Hubs are Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Jaipur and Bengaluru, in that order. Technology is India's favourite traded vertical category contributing to 44 per cent of transactions in eBay Census. For global trade, lifestyle is the clear winner at 64 per cent of all transactions.

Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata were all found to be profit buying cities which sold more items on eBay than they bought. According to Kashyap Vadapalli, director, marketing, eBay India, the study aimed to document the key findings and trends in online buying and selling across Indians in the Top 100 ecommerce hubs, 28 states and 7 union territories.

This is really very surprising. Internet penetration in rural areas was a big challenge and the figures mentioned here says that the penetration is happening at a very good speed. Online sales is a high end internet usage and rural india purchasing online is a great sign and a very big opportunity for ecommerce companies. Jaipur is a surprise pick in the top 5 cities.

If online shopping picks up in India, there will be tsunami of internet marking firms on the net to cater to the needs of the buyers.
