Reliance Entertainment to launch BigMaps in 4 months

Reliance Entertainment, a part of Reliance ADA (Anil Dhirubhai Ambani) Group, is preparing to launch BigMaps.com, a mapping service that will allow users to look-up local information on a map from the desktop or mobile. BigMaps.com will also allow users to add content onto the maps. According to Manav Sethi, corporate strategy, Reliance Entertainment Ventures, BigMaps will be launched in the next four months.

Sridhar G, CEO, Yulop.com, has said, “The top location-based services players don’t currently have enough data for small town and cities. If you look into Google Maps and try to locate Mysore, you wouldn't find the arterial or smaller roads.” Sridhar hopes BigMaps through its users-generated content should be able to fill this gap.

“BigMaps.com should help the industry in driving adoption of location-based services and GPS navigation in India,” Rakesh Verma, MD, MapMyIndia.com, has said. “Large players can help create market awareness of new categories, and make consumers understand the potential of these services.”

It is believed that BigMaps would be using the maps that were developed and updated with geographically referenced information by Reliance eight years ago to lay over 25,000 KMs of optical fibre cables across India. [via Pluggd.in]
